The beginning of my new website

Lately, I have been thinking of redesigning my website which serves as my online portfolio. The reason is because my current one isn't doing justice to what I can do as web designer. It lacks purpose and clarity. What it currently is, is a page with a series of links that point to websites I have created. In other words, all the link are making visitors leave which isn't really my objective.

So what's my objective? To get people to see that I can do a good job and to get people to hire me.

In order to reach that objective, I have thought of using words on the home page. For example, I could use an introductory paragraph that says something like: "I am a web designer experienced in building clean, simple and user-friendly websites for clients across the globe." It's a simple statement that lets visitors know what I do and who I do it for. It's also very clear and easy to read. Initially, I had a longer text, but I realized that it will be better suited for an About section.

In addition to an overhaul of the home page, I have also thought about the general structure of the website with a navigation that will contain these elements: Services, Portfolio, Blog, About, Contact. I have very clearly defined each of them as follows:
  • Services - The things I do
  • Portfolio - The things I've done
  • Blog - The things I write
  • About - The things I am
  • Contact - The things you want to tell me
I already figured out the content of each section, so now, I am thinking about how I can display all that information. This is the design stage.

Stay tuned for more details on this personal project.

Very simple indeed :)

Our worst client is ourself.

I've been working on my redesign for the better part of a year (and more) very sporadically. Trying various ways to start out. Never locking into something that I've enjoyed for longer than a week. This is mostly design-wise (I never follow the same process when working on personal projects). And these days I'm pushing myself to dedicate more time to locking down what I want my website to be (visually and content-wise).

Content-wise, I'm not sure if I should be wordy or brief. Brief with a simple design would be best for simplicities sake but sometimes going into details might better express oneself in defining to readers who they might want to work with.

The general elements I want to include in the structure are: Portfolio, Clients, Services, About, Contact, Hire.

Now in terms of what will be a page/navigation-item I'm still not 100% sure. Wondering if a Services page is actually necessary or a simple aside on the Homepage listing it would be enough. Or maybe a more complete aside in the About page. Since another thought will be how far should one dwell into about themselves and their company in the About page.

The Contact page is another tricky one. Wondering if it should just be a link to the email or an actual form. Which feels more friendly. One point I've settled on including is a Request for Proposal form to help me in better responding to project requests from new and old clients.

Another element I had been considering for a while but have finally decided to drop is a Blog. Because I wasn't sure if I should mix personal with professional topics. What will do is set it up as its own entity on its own domain to mix both freely.

Anyway, quite interested in seeing how you'll be orienting your future website. I'm still hunting for a comfortable direction.
